nay, this was but his dream ---
but this denoted a foregone conclusion
--- 'tis a shrewd doubt, though it be but a dream!

Mr. Nicholas Goulding
Nicholas is a Meryton native, and his father was before him. The family home, Haye Park, is a vertically-inclined house squashed rather unhappily onto a large park, known for its deer and the pretty little brook that runs through it. He is a stubborn, unpleasant sort of fellow who is happier by far to offend people than please them, and who does all of his best business before breakfast. He has recently become the guardian to his young cousin, Miss Cadwallader, and he is entirely unsure as to how he feels about this monumental change to his otherwise clockwork existence.[/center]

Miss Felicity Cadwallader
Though he is still coming to terms with the fact of his cousin's existence, let alone her dependency on him, Nicholas does -- deep down -- care very much for the tragic circumstances that have brought out her situation. He realises that her future happiness may not yet be secure, for though he does have some money to settle upon her he is not entirely certain how much it may amount to. Having to work for her own living is a very real possibility that the girl faces.

Mr. James Delaford
Having known each other for longer than either of them care to mention, their friendship is as strong as it is unfathomable. They are both of them so contrary to the other that it is likely the only thing that keeps them from wanting to kill one another. Nicholas relies on James when he needs advice or a friendly ear, and James is one of the few people he would put himself at any sort of disadvantage for.
Miss Charlotte Delaford
His friend's younger sister is the source of much amusement for Nicholas, though he would be unlikely to ever admit such a thing. Her intelligence and ready wit marks her as the most interesting woman in Meryton if only for the fact that he marks her as hardly a woman at all, and he would rather seek her out and quarrel with her than sit at home and twiddle his thumbs.

Miss Felicity Cadwallader
Miss Cadwallader is the only child of a Colonel and his wife who died some six months ago on a ship making the crossing back from France. A sweet-natured girl who is determined to make the best of her new situation in Meryton as Mr. Goulding's ward, she is a lively creature who delights in the outdoors to the point of it becoming unseemly.

She is indebted to her cousin in ways she cannot begin to describe -- or ever hope to repay. Though they hardly know one another at present she has every intention of becoming the sister he never had (regardless of whether or not he even wanted a sister) and is in very real danger of killing him with kindness.
---------- friends
Mr. James Delaford
Having met her cousin's particular friend rather early on in the piece, he is already a fast favourite with Felicity. His easy nature must naturally recommend him as a jovial sort of fellow, and she greatly approves of his ability to tempt her cousin to stop frowning.
Miss Charlotte Delaford
Though she has seen many a fine lady since her coming out, Flick is at a loss for how any of them would compare to the effortless grace possessed by Miss Delaford. Determined that they ought to be fast friends, Felicity is often not sure what Charlotte is saying but she is certain that it is extremely kind and witty.
