Earl of Carlton
• Always very independent, headstrong
• Stubborn but kind-hearted
• Caring of people in general which was always a point of contention to his family
• Fell in love with Lady Odette when he was visiting France with friends.
• Married her against the will of his family. Would have been disinherited, except he was the only heir.


Lady Odette Leone West (nee. Portier/i]) (43)
Countess of Carlton
• Her family was never very wealthy, and she was determined to marry well. Because of their standing in France, the Portiers were somewhat ridiculed in French society.
• She feigned loved for her husband initially, seeing a rich young English Lord who would provide well for her. Over the years, she has come to love him for the generosity of his heart and kindness of his spirit.
• Has always had a sickly constitution, and has a physician in her sole employ.
• The main point of unhappiness between her and her husband was the constant stream of baby girls she bore. Upon the birth of their son she had thought to be done with child-bearing, but his Lordship is determined to have a spare, as he is the last of his line.
• Is known for her extravagant spending.
• Had a string of miscarriages before finally conceiving Leighton.


Lady Natalia Rose West (22)
• Has the looks and sense of her mother, but the warm heart of her father.
• Attempts to set an example to her sisters.
• Has begun to feel the pressure from her mother to find herself a husband; the sooner she marries, the better.


Lady Gwendolyn Jane West (20)
• Cynical and a little too literal.
• Knows that she will be used to the family’s advantage and likely be married off young, and resents it.
• Would like to be a famous musician and practises several times a day.


Lady Penelope Anne West (19)
• Very devil-may-care; she loves everyone and is rather well loved herself.
• Enjoys novels avidly and is always arguing their merit with Adeline.
• Believes she will experience love at first sight.


Lady Adeline Paige West (17)
• Rather ambitious; knows she has money and is therefore set on marrying for a title.
• Prides herself on her intelligence, and is rather opinionated.
• Is a kind girl but will often put aside her charity works or being kind to those beneath her in order to impress others.
